Stakeholder perspective
A lens through which an entity is perceived or considered, especially in relation to the concerns of stakeholders. Domains have customary perspectives, for example operational and financial in production, or provider and customer in hospitality.
What this term settles
A perspective is not a viewpoint and not a concern. It is the lens a stakeholder brings. The definition lets a firm separate the person from the lens, which is useful when one person represents several perspectives, or when a perspective has no representative at all.
What to do in your practice
List the perspectives that matter to the entity, the stakeholder classes that hold them and the concerns each perspective tends to raise. Use the list when composing a review panel, so that a missing perspective is visible before the decision. Ask each panel member which perspective they are representing before the review starts. The question surfaces the person who is present for several perspectives and the perspective with no voice, and it takes less than a minute.
Who it binds
The role that owns the practice area the term governs. A definition binds nobody on its own; it binds the reader who adopts the term in a method, a description or a contract.
Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for
- A perspective map with the stakeholder classes that hold each.An auditor asks whether the review heard the perspectives that matter.
- A panel composition record against the map.Shows the review was designed, not assembled by availability.
- A note of perspectives not represented.Makes the gap explicit and owned.
- The concerns raised from each perspective.Connects the lens to the content of the decision.
Common gaps this page catches
- Reviews are composed by seniority rather than perspective.
- One person is assumed to represent several perspectives without evidence.
- No record exists of which perspectives were heard.
What to prepare before publication
Build the perspective map for the next major decision. Compose the panel against it and record the perspectives not represented. Ask the panel to confirm the map at the start.
