Dimension

A coherent group of aspects that belongs to a domain, a field of knowledge or a discipline. The aspects in a dimension share a type and are distinguished within it by some feature, such as the phases of a life cycle.

What this term settles

Dimensions organise aspects. They are how a firm avoids an unstructured list of properties. The definition also allows a dimension to be unordered or partly ordered, which matters in practice: not every set of aspects has a natural sequence, and pretending it does creates false dependencies.

What to do in your practice

Write the dimensions the firm uses, the aspects in each and the ordering, if any. Check that every aspect belongs to one dimension and that the dimensions together cover the questions the practice asks. A missing dimension is a class of question no one is answering.

Who it binds

The role that owns the practice area the term governs. A definition binds nobody on its own; it binds the reader who adopts the term in a method, a description or a contract.

Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for

  • A dimension map with aspects and ordering.
Shows the architecture practice has a structure for properties rather than an ad hoc list.
  • A coverage note of the questions each dimension supports.
An auditor asks whether the practice covers the whole entity or only the familiar parts.
  • A record of aspects that do not fit any dimension.
Reveals gaps in the framework before they become gaps in the architecture.
  • The review date of the dimension map.
Keeps the structure current as the practice matures.
Ask your teamWhich class of question about this entity has no dimension in our framework, and who would notice?

Common gaps this page catches

  • Dimensions are inherited from a tool and never reviewed against the questions the firm asks.
  • Aspects are duplicated across dimensions, so two teams report different values for the same property.
  • There is no dimension for the life cycle, so sustainment questions fall outside the model.

What to prepare before publication

Map the dimensions in use and the questions each supports. Add a coverage column and mark the questions with no dimension. Pick the most important gap and add one dimension, not a whole new framework.
