What this term settles

A framework is a social artefact as much as a technical one. It belongs to a domain or a community, and it carries their conventions. That is why two frameworks can both be correct and still be incompatible. The definition gives a firm a way to talk about framework choice without pretending there is one universal answer.

What to do in your practice

List every architecture framework in use, the community it came from, the conventions it imposes and the parts the firm has tailored. Name the owner of the tailoring. Where two frameworks overlap, record which one wins for which decision. The record is what makes a multi framework estate governable.

Who it binds

The role that owns the practice area the term governs. A definition binds nobody on its own; it binds the reader who adopts the term in a method, a description or a contract.

Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for

  • The framework register with source community, version and tailoring owner.
An auditor asks which framework a description follows and who approved the tailoring.
  • The precedence rules between frameworks.
Prevents two teams citing different frameworks to justify opposite decisions.
  • A mapping of the firm vocabulary to the framework vocabulary.
Shows the firm is not maintaining two languages for the same idea.
  • The training material that introduces the framework to new staff.
Shows the conventions are transmitted, not just stored.
Ask your teamWhen two frameworks in this firm disagree, which one wins, and who decided that?

Common gaps this page catches

  • Frameworks are adopted by team preference with no register and no precedence rule.
  • Tailoring is undocumented, so a framework is claimed but not actually followed.
  • The vocabulary of the framework and the firm glossary have drifted apart.

What to prepare before publication

Build the framework register in one workshop. For each framework, record the community, the version, the parts in use, the parts tailored and the owner. Add one precedence rule for each overlap you find.
