Architecture definition and communication

The subclause addresses how an architecture is defined and communicated. It follows the design pair and precedes the concern and viewpoint material, so it sits between what the architecture is and how it is expressed to others.

What this unit settles

The title pairs definition with communication, which is a reminder that an architecture that is not communicated is not doing its job. The document treats communication as part of architecting (3.2.3), not as an afterthought once the design is done.

What to do in your practice

Give every architecture a communication plan: the audiences, the message each needs, the artefact that carries it and the cadence. Record the communication as evidence, not only the document. Review the plan when the audience changes. Ask three readers from different audiences what they understood after the last communication. If their answers differ, the architecture was published but not communicated. The gap is usually the artefact, not the meeting: one document cannot carry the same message to a board, a delivery team and an auditor.

Who it binds

The organisation and the architecture practice. This unit is not a shall requirement; the claim level states what it is.

Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for

  • A communication plan per architecture with audiences and artefacts.
An auditor asks who received the architecture and in what form.
  • A record of the communication events and the questions raised.
Shows the communication happened and was engaged with.
  • The artefact used per audience.
Shows the message was tailored, not broadcast.
  • The owner of the plan.
    Makes communication accountable.
Ask your teamWhich audience needs this architecture and has never received a version they could use?

Common gaps this page catches

  • Communication is one presentation at approval.
  • The same document is sent to every audience.
  • No record exists of who received what.

What to prepare before publication

Write the communication plan for one architecture. Name three audiences and the artefact each needs. Deliver one and record the questions. The questions become the next version.
