Context
The part of the environment that bears on an entity: the entities, situations, conditions and circumstances that shape it, influence it, relate to it or interact with it. Context helps to fix, specify or clarify what an event means for the entity.
What this term settles
Context is the part of the environment that is relevant now. The distinction is practical: the environment can be vast, while the context is the subset a decision depends on. Getting the context wrong is a common cause of an architecture that is technically sound and commercially wrong.
What to do in your practice
Write the context for each architecture decision as a short list of the entities and conditions the decision assumes. When a context assumption fails, the decision should be reopened rather than defended. Review the context list at each stage gate.
Who it binds
The role that owns the practice area the term governs. A definition binds nobody on its own; it binds the reader who adopts the term in a method, a description or a contract.
Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for
- A context note attached to each major decision.Shows the decision was made against stated conditions, not in the abstract.
- A list of interactions between the entity and its context. An auditor asks what the entity exchanges with the outside world, including information and obligations.
- A record of context changes and the decisions reopened.Shows the architecture responds to change rather than accumulating exceptions.
- The review date for each context note.Separates live assumptions from stale ones.
Common gaps this page catches
- Context is treated as a synonym for environment, so the diagram is too broad to guide a decision.
- Assumptions are not written down, so no one can tell when they stop being true.
- Decisions are defended after the context has changed.
What to prepare before publication
Add a context box to the decision record: three to five entities or conditions the decision depends on, each with a date checked. Use it in the next design authority meeting.
