What this term settles

This is one of the most useful corrections in the document. Firms routinely say enterprise when they mean the company. The definition says the enterprise is the activity: entering a market, running a fund, delivering a service. That shift makes the enterprise boundary a question about the undertaking, which is usually the boundary that matters for architecture.

What to do in your practice

For each enterprise level architecture, write the undertaking in a sentence: what the firm is trying to achieve, for whom, over what horizon. Then name the organisations that take part. If the sentence cannot be written, the enterprise architecture has no subject and will become an organisational chart.

Who it binds

The role that owns the practice area the term governs. A definition binds nobody on its own; it binds the reader who adopts the term in a method, a description or a contract.

Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for

  • An enterprise statement naming the undertaking, the beneficiaries and the horizon.
An auditor asks what the enterprise architecture is an architecture of.
  • A list of participating organisations and their roles.
Separates the undertaking from the entities that deliver it.
  • The goals and measures of the undertaking.
Connects the architecture to value rather than to structure.
  • A record of changes to the enterprise scope over time.
    Shows the boundary is governed.
Ask your teamWhat is the undertaking this enterprise architecture serves, stated without naming an organisational unit?

Common gaps this page catches

  • Enterprise architecture is scoped to the org chart, so a merger redefines it overnight.
  • Goals are restated as departmental objectives, so no single undertaking is visible.
  • The participant list is assumed rather than recorded.

What to prepare before publication

Write the enterprise statement for the largest current change. Test it by asking whether a reasonable reader could tell what is inside and outside the undertaking. If not, the enterprise scope needs a decision before any architecture work continues.
