Architecting principles
The clause sets out architecting principles, under an introduction and three groups: principles about the purpose of an architecture, principles about its focus, and principles about architecting outcomes.
What this unit settles
The clause structure is the public evidence: the principles are organised by purpose, focus and outcome. That gives a firm a ready made structure for its own principle register, and it makes the point that principles are grouped by the question they answer, not by technology.
What to do in your practice
Rebuild the firm principle register under the three headings. For each principle, record the question it answers, the entity it governs, the evidence that would show it was followed and the owner. Retire principles that fit none of the three groups. Name the owner of the principle register and give the register a review cycle tied to the practice review, not to a project. A register reviewed only when a project asks for it will lag the estate by years, and the lag is invisible until an auditor asks which principles were in force at a decision.
Who it binds
The organisation and the architecture practice. This unit is not a shall requirement; the claim level states what it is.
Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for
- The principle register under purpose, focus and outcome. An auditor can see the logic of the principle set.
- The question each principle answers.Prevents principles that are slogans.
- The evidence per principle.Makes the register testable.
- The retirement record.Keeps the register short and current.
Common gaps this page catches
- The principle list is grouped by technology tower.
- Principles have no evidence test.
- The list grows and is never pruned.
What to prepare before publication
Rebuild the register under the three headings. Write the question each principle answers. Retire the rest. Use the register in the next design authority.
