Architecture principle
A belief, norm, rule or value that concerns an architecture and shapes how the entity, its context and its life cycle are realised.
What this term settles
An architecture principle constrains the thing, not the work. It is what a delivery team must respect when it makes a design choice, and it is what an auditor can test against a built system. The definition ties the principle to the life cycle and the context, so a principle that only makes sense at one moment is not really an architecture principle.
What to do in your practice
For each architecture principle, write the entity it governs, the life cycle stages it applies to, the context assumptions it depends on and the owner. Then write the evidence that would show it was followed. Principles without evidence become slogans; principles with evidence become a review gate.
Who it binds
The role that owns the practice area the term governs. A definition binds nobody on its own; it binds the reader who adopts the term in a method, a description or a contract.
Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for
- The architecture principle register with entity, stages and context per principle.Shows each principle has a defined reach rather than being applied by opinion.
- A trace from each principle to the design decisions that followed it.Lets a reviewer test compliance without reconstructing the intent.
- A list of approved deviations with the risk accepted.Shows the principle was applied with judgement, not ignored.
- The evidence sample for one principle across three projects.Proves the register is operable, not theoretical.
Common gaps this page catches
- Principles are stored in a slide deck and are not referenced in design reviews.
- No principle states the stages or context in which it applies.
- Deviations are approved verbally and never recorded against the principle.
What to prepare before publication
Choose the three principles most likely to be tested in the next audit. For each, write the evidence that would prove it was followed, then check whether that evidence exists today. The gaps become actions in the dated plan.
