Architecture description

The work product used to express an architecture. Its purpose determines its scope, and it is complete when it deals with the architecture as that purpose requires. Several purpose specific descriptions may be needed to capture an entity architecture, and even then some aspects may be overlooked.

What this term settles

This is the most consequential definition for audit. A description is not judged against a universal completeness standard; it is judged against its stated purpose. The definition also admits that a set of descriptions may still miss aspects, which is an honest limit that prevents overclaiming.

What to do in your practice

Put the purpose on the first page of every architecture description. State the questions the description is meant to answer and the ones it does not. Keep a register of descriptions with purpose, owner, version and status, so the set can be assessed as a set.

Who it binds

The role that owns the practice area the term governs. A definition binds nobody on its own; it binds the reader who adopts the term in a method, a description or a contract.

Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for

  • A purpose statement on the description and in the register.
An auditor tests completeness against the stated purpose.
  • A coverage note of what the description does not address.
Prevents a reader assuming the description is exhaustive.
  • The owner and approval record.
    Shows the description is governed.
  • The version history.
Shows which description a decision relied on.
Ask your teamWhat purpose does this description serve, and which questions is it explicitly not answering?

Common gaps this page catches

  • Descriptions have no stated purpose, so every reader invents one.
  • A single description is treated as the whole architecture and misses whole aspects.
  • No register exists, so the firm cannot say what descriptions it has.

What to prepare before publication

Add a purpose and non coverage section to the template. Populate the register for every live description. The register is the first artefact an auditor will ask for.
