What this unit settles

An introduction to principles is a statement that the principles are connected. For a firm, that means adopting one principle without the others can create a contradiction, for example pursuing reuse without a focus on fitness for purpose.

What to do in your practice

When adopting a principle, record the other principles it depends on or tensions with. Review the set as a set. A principle that cannot be adopted without breaking another is a decision for the architecture board, not for a team. Record the date each principle was adopted and the decision that adopted it. A principle with no adoption record cannot be applied to a decision made before the register existed, and firms routinely apply today principles to yesterday decisions without noticing the anachronism.

Who it binds

The organisation and the architecture practice. This unit is not a shall requirement; the claim level states what it is.

Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for

  • A dependency and tension map between principles.
Shows the firm understands the set.
  • The board decision record for conflicting principles.
Shows conflicts are resolved at the right level.
  • The adoption status per principle.
    Makes partial adoption visible.
  • The review record.
    Keeps the set coherent.
Ask your teamWhich two principles in this firm pull in opposite directions, and where is the trade off recorded?

Common gaps this page catches

  • Principles are adopted one at a time with no tension analysis.
  • Teams resolve conflicts locally.
  • No board record exists.

What to prepare before publication

Map the dependencies and tensions. Take the strongest tension to the architecture board and record the resolution. Publish the resolution with the principles.
