Architecture design concepts · 3.4.4
Engineering effort
The transformation of an architecture design for a solution entity into a solution design, by elaborating, refining, expanding and detailing it until the design is complete enough for implementation.
What this term settles
The engineering effort has a defined input and output. That makes the boundary between architecture and engineering auditable: the input is architecture design, the output is solution design. It also explains why an engineering team that starts before the architecture design exists is not doing engineering in this sense, it is inventing the architecture.
What to do in your practice
State the input the engineering effort expects and the output it must produce. Where the input is incomplete, record the gap and the decision to proceed, rather than filling it silently. Review the output against the implementation need before release.
Who it binds
The role that owns the practice area the term governs. A definition binds nobody on its own; it binds the reader who adopts the term in a method, a description or a contract.
Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for
- An input acceptance note from the engineering lead.Shows the engineering effort started from a known architecture design.
- A gap record where the input was incomplete. An auditor asks what was assumed and who accepted it.
- The solution design completeness review.Shows the output was tested against implementation need.
- A trace from solution design elements back to architecture design.Lets a reviewer see that the architecture constrained the solution.
Common gaps this page catches
- Engineering starts from a programme plan and the architecture is written afterwards.
- Incomplete input is filled by assumption with no record.
- No trace exists between solution elements and architecture decisions.
What to prepare before publication
For the next delivery, require an input acceptance note. Record every gap and who accepted it. Use the gap list in the architecture retrospective.
Common questions
- What does Engineering effort mean in ISO 42024?
- The transformation of an architecture design for a solution entity into a solution design, by elaborating, refining, expanding and detailing it until the design is complete enough for implementation.
- What evidence should we keep for 3.4.4?
- An input acceptance note from the engineering lead. A gap record where the input was incomplete. The solution design completeness review.
