What this unit settles

The note addresses the two entities most often confused at the top of an architecture practice. The document uses enterprise for the undertaking and system for the arrangement that produces a stated behaviour. The note is where that distinction is worked through.

What to do in your practice

For each top level architecture, record whether the entity is an enterprise or a system, and state the behaviour or undertaking in a sentence. Where an architecture claims both, split it or state which one leads. Write the enterprise statement and the system statement for the same change and put them side by side. If they describe the same thing, the firm has one entity with two labels, and the top level architecture will keep oscillating between them at every reorganisation.

Who it binds

The architecture practice, as a note. The public preview does not state the annex status, so this page does not claim one.

Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for

  • The entity type and statement per top level architecture.
An auditor asks what kind of entity the architecture is about.
  • The behaviour or undertaking sentence.
    Makes the boundary meaningful.
  • The split record where both were claimed.
    Shows the ambiguity was resolved.
  • The owner.
    Makes the decision accountable.
Ask your teamIs this top level architecture about an undertaking or about a system, and does the document say so?

Common gaps this page catches

  • Enterprise architecture is scoped to the organisation and system architecture to applications, with no stated distinction.
  • An architecture claims both entities.
  • No behaviour or undertaking statement exists.

What to prepare before publication

Classify the top level architectures by entity type. Add the statement sentence to each. Resolve the dual claims with the accountable owner.
