ISO/IEC/IEEE DIS 42024 is Edition 1 of a new architecture fundamentals standard, 74 pages, from ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 7. ISO records stage 40.99 on 8 September 2026: the DIS was approved for registration as an FDIS. The planning date used here is 15 September 2027, an estimate, not an ISO commitment.

## The abstract, in three parts

The document sets out the foundational vocabulary, concepts and principles of an architecture and of the architecting practice, for entities that include software, systems, enterprises, missions, systems of systems, families of systems, infrastructures, products, product lines, service lines, technologies and business domains.
It is written for organisations that develop architectures, organisations that want sustained success from an architecture practice, parties who need a common understanding of the vocabulary, organisations that assess conformity against architecture-related standards, providers of architecture descriptions, guidance, training or evaluation, and developers of architecture standards, description languages, modelling languages, reference architectures, frameworks and tools.
It addresses generic terms only, not terms unique to a domain, and it does not address architecture competencies.

## What the document is for

The introduction says the document specifies the fundamentals of architecture practice through a core vocabulary, architecture concepts and architecting principles. Its stated intent is to help the reader understand those fundamentals and get more value from architecture related standards through uniformity and better integration.

## The four benefits it names

Benefit

### Strategic alignment and planning

Clearer and more efficient transformation and modernisation, by connecting enterprise goals to systems, software, services and processes.

Benefit

### Technical cohesion and evolution

Better interoperability and reuse across systems, services and technologies, with a stable basis for change.

Benefit

### Organisational enablement

A basis for identifying the competencies the practice needs and for onboarding new team members and customers.

Benefit

### Stakeholder engagement and risk management

A framework to express, share and evaluate challenges, opportunities and motivating factors, and to identify risk earlier.

## Where it sits in the family

The abstract places the document in the existing group of architecture related standards, naming ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010, 42020 and 42030. It is a first edition, so nothing is replaced. The relationship is family and shared vocabulary, not incorporation: clause 2 states that the document has no normative references.

## The key date and its basis

A planning target, not an ISO commitment. ISO records stage 40.99 on 2026-09-08 and no publication date. The target sits 372 days after that stage. In ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010:2022 the same stage fell on 2022-01-03 and publication on 2022-11-07, a gap of 308 days, so this target is 64 days later than that precedent. It is labelled an estimate wherever it appears.

Read the date as a planning target. ISO has published no date. The same stage code in ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010:2022 fell on 3 January 2022 and publication on 7 November 2022, which is the comparison behind the estimate. A slip changes the plan, not the practice work.

## What this product does not claim

The public preview carries the foreword, introduction, clauses 1 and 2, clause 3 with all 35 defined terms, the contents and the bibliography. The bodies of clauses 4 and 5 and of Annexes A and B are not public. This site does not reproduce them, does not claim a clause level change, and does not certify anything.
