# Aspect

A part of the character or nature of an entity. Aspects pick a subset of an entity's properties, represented as attributes, so a model built on that aspect can answer a fixed set of questions concerning the entity in its context.

## What this term settles

An aspect is not a view and not a concern. It is a slice of the entity itself. The distinction keeps modelling honest: a security aspect is a set of properties of the entity, while a security view is an expression of the architecture for a set of concerns. Teams that conflate the two produce views that cannot be validated against the entity.

## What to do in your practice

For each model in use, record the aspects it represents and the questions it can answer. Then record the questions it cannot answer. That second list is the honest limit of the model and is what prevents a model being treated as the whole architecture.

## Who it binds

The role that owns the practice area the term governs. A definition binds nobody on its own; it binds the reader who adopts the term in a method, a description or a contract.

## Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for

- A model to aspect map with the questions each model answers.
Shows the model has a defined purpose rather than an implied completeness.

- A list of questions the model cannot answer.
Prevents over reliance on a model in a decision.

- The attributes used to represent each aspect.
An auditor asks how the aspect is made testable.

- The context in which each aspect was assessed.
Ties the aspect to the conditions that make it meaningful.

Ask your teamWhich questions can this model answer, and which questions is it silently unable to answer?

## Common gaps this page catches

- Models are treated as the architecture, so unmodelled properties disappear from review.

- Aspects are named but never mapped to attributes.

- No one has written down what the model cannot answer.

## What to prepare before publication

For the main modelling tool, write the aspect map and the cannot answer list. Review it with the people who make decisions from the models. The list is usually the strongest argument for diversifying the evidence beyond the tool.

## Common questions

What does Aspect mean in ISO 42024?
A part of the character or nature of an entity. Aspects pick a subset of an entity's properties, represented as attributes, so a model built on that aspect can answer a fixed set of questions concerning the entity in its context.
What evidence should we keep for 3.3.7?
A model to aspect map with the questions each model answers. A list of questions the model cannot answer. The attributes used to represent each aspect.
