# Architecture viewpoint

The rules by which an architecture view is created, read and used. A viewpoint is associated with stakeholder perspectives, frames their concerns, and supplies the conventions by which views are created with architectural aspects in mind.

## What this term settles

The viewpoint is the reusable rule, the view is the instance. A firm with views but no viewpoints cannot reproduce its own work, because the conventions live in individual heads. The link to stakeholder perspectives also explains why viewpoints differ by audience rather than by tool.

## What to do in your practice

Write a viewpoint register: name, the perspective it serves, the concerns it frames, the aspects it reflects, the notation, the rules for interpretation and the views it produces. Adopt external viewpoints where they fit and record the tailoring.

## Who it binds

The role that owns the practice area the term governs. A definition binds nobody on its own; it binds the reader who adopts the term in a method, a description or a contract.

## Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for

- The viewpoint register with conventions and produced views.
An auditor asks whether the views follow a stated convention.

- A mapping from viewpoint to stakeholder perspective and concern.
Shows the set of viewpoints covers the audiences.

- The notation and interpretation rules per viewpoint.
Makes the view reproducible by someone other than its author.

- A record of external viewpoints adopted and tailored.
Shows the firm knows what it changed.

Ask your teamCould a new architect produce a consistent view from this viewpoint without asking the original author?

## Common gaps this page catches

- Viewpoints are implicit in tool templates and never written down.

- No viewpoint names the perspective or concern it serves.

- External viewpoints are adopted without recording the tailoring.

## What to prepare before publication

Write three viewpoints for the most used views. Test each by asking a new architect to produce a view from the written convention. The questions they ask are the missing rules.
