# Architecting precepts

The subclause closes clause 4 with architecting precepts, ahead of the principles in clause 5. It builds on the distinction between an architecting principle (3.2.4), which guides the effort, and an architecture principle (3.2.5), which guides the entity.

## What this unit settles

A precept is a guiding rule for the practice. The placement matters: the document separates the precepts of the work from the principles of the architecture, and only then sets out the principles in clause 5. A firm that keeps one list is missing the distinction the document draws twice.

## What to do in your practice

Write the firm precepts as statements about how architecting is done: how decisions are made, how evidence is kept, how disagreement is resolved. Keep them separate from the architecture principles. Give each precept a test and a review cycle. Put the precepts on one page and the architecture principles on another. Review the precepts with the people who do the work and the principles with the people who own the estate. When the two lists are reviewed together, the conversation drifts to technology and the precepts are never tested.

## Who it binds

The organisation and the architecture practice. This unit is not a shall requirement; the claim level states what it is.

## Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for

- The precept register with a test per precept.
Shows the practice has stated how it works.

- A sample of decisions that followed a precept.
Proves the precepts are used.

- The review record.
Shows the precepts are governed.

- The separation from architecture principles.
Prevents the two lists collapsing into one.

Ask your teamWhich precept did this practice break in the last quarter, and what happened as a result?

## Common gaps this page catches

- Precepts and principles are one list.

- No precept has a test.

- The practice has never reviewed its precepts.

## What to prepare before publication

Split the current list. Write a test for each precept. Review the precepts with the practice, not with the delivery programme.
